Milford GAA 2013

posted 1 Oct 2013, 08:57 by Kevin Keenan   [ updated 1 Oct 2013, 08:58 ]

Unfortunately, due to changing demographics and the economic downturn, Milford have been unable to field teams for the past two years. The AGM of 2011 produced some ideas for the following year, but despite the hard work of those involved, the difficult decision was reached to enter no team for 2012, allowing the remaining players to get permissions to play with nearby clubs, many who still do to this day. The decision was revisited again at the 2012 AGM, but with the same outcome.

Hundreds of players, both adult and juvenile, have played for the club over the years, from the initial underage startup in 1999, and the adult club in 2002. I would like to take this oppertunity to thank all those who played, trained, mentored, administrated, sponsored and contributed both financially and voluntarily.

As a postscript, various parts of this website have proved popular, and will continue to be updated, whereas others will appear dated.

On Monday our junior footballers played neighbours St Patricks in the semi final of the city junior football league in Rathbane. This was a strange game in which we were slow to settle. But once we found our rhythm we played some very good football. Unfortunately for Milford, we conceded some soft goals in the first half which meat we were always playing catch up and despite great goals from Barry McGinty and Darren Hyland we finished on the losing side on this occasion.

Upcoming fixtures:

ACFL away to Camogue Rovers 23rd June

Our junior footballers city league campaign continued on Tuesday when we hosted Patrickswell. Our lads played some great football at times but we found scores hard to come by. After twenty minutes we were one goal and two points ahead before Patrickswell scored a penalty to get back into the match. However, Milford found their scoring boots in the second half and kicked 8 unanswered points before the visitors scored a very good point. The final score saw Milford winners on a 1-10 to 1-1 scoreline.

Good luck to all of our players who are currently doing exams.

Our junior footballers had an excellent victory over Ballinacurra Gaels in round 3 of the city football league. Playing with a very strong breeze, Milford settled quickly and opened up a two point lead. Ballinacurra then played some good football and led by 4 points to three before Milford again found their groove and two excellent goals helped us to 2-5 to 0-5 half time lead. Ballinacurra started the second half well with a goal and continued put Milford under much pressure. However, Milford dug deep and against the breeze played some great football. Milford’s efforts were rewarded with a great goal and some excellent points which helped us to a 3-10 to 1-11 victory.

Good luck to all of our players who are currently doing exams.

Last Thursday our junior footballers entertained Claughaun in the second round of the city football league. Milford played very well in the first half and led by three points to one after ten minutes, however we were rocked by two well taken Claughaun goals. Claughaun enjoyed a period of dominance before some well taken Milford points closed the gap to 2-6 to 0-6 at half time. Milford played some great football in the second half and a great Nathan McGinty goal narrowed the gap but in the end we finished on the losing side on a 2-10 to 1-10 scoreline.

City JBFL away to Ballinacurra 5th May

Saturday saw our junior footballers entertain Banogue in the third round of the all-county football league. Milford played very well in the first half and led by two points at half time thanks to a Barry McGinty goal and points from Darren Hyland, Luke McGinty and Dominic Joyce. Banogue fought back in the second half before a well worked Milford goal levelled the scores with a minute to go. However, the visitors snatched a one piont victory with a last minute free.

Hard luck to the Limerick minor footballers and our own Niall Hayes who were narrowly defeated in the Munster championship on Saturday.
