City junior B football league final, 15/7/04

Milford 1-6 Pallaskenry 1-6

After a nine year absence, the Kerryman Cup was up again for grabs in the City junior B football league final last night in Mungret. However, the famous old trophy will have to wait another while before finding its new home as Milford and Pallaskenry ended level after a highly entertaining hour of football.

Tony Connolly’s injury-time free for the Plasseymen set up the replay but, earlier in the game, his side looked as if they’d carry off their first ever title as they raced into a five point lead by the end of the first quarter. After the break, however, the Pallas midfield took over and it was only in the closing stages that Milford found their second wind to snatch the draw.

Connolly’s free opened the scoring and was added to by John Collins before Willie Lynch first strike for Pallas. After Connolly’s next free was met by Stephen Downey, Jusitn Fitzgerald finished off a three pass move to the net and Leonard Dolan widened the gap. However, as Shane Loftus and Jerome O’Connell came more into the game, Pallas halted the

Milford gallop and Loftus, off a quick ‘45’, narrowed the half-time deficit to 1-4 to 0-3.

Points from Michael Paul O’Keeffe and Shane Hogan’s free shaved it further and Pallas pressure paid off when Willie Lynch pounced on a break to blast past Kevin Keenan. When O’Keeffe added another score, the momentum had clearly swung their way but PJ Byrne’s introduction had an immediate effect as he pulled back one for Milford and their closing rally finally paid off with Conolly’s last gasp free.
