County Junior B Football quarter-final, 28/9/03

Knockane 1-9 Milford 0-6

They may be the two smallest clubs in the county but Knockane and Milford served up a very entertaining hour of football when they clashed in Caherconlish in the county junior B quarter-final on Sunday morning. A goal before half-time gave the Garrydoolis side the lead they needed going into the break and, despite a spirited revival by the City runners-up, they held out before consolidating their advantage in the closing quarter.

Mike Browne’s free-taking played a significant part in Knockane’s victory and he was assisted by the composure of Diarmuid Grace at the back and the running of Niall Ryan up front. Short a regular free-taker in the first-half, Milford struggled to convert their chances despite storming displays from Kevin Keenan, John Daly and Ollie McGarr.

Although possession was shared, Knockane made the running in the openeing quarter and raced into the lead through Liam Butler, Anthony O’Grady and two Browne frees. Monaleen settled when Fabian Healy got their opening score but were rocked by a scrambled goal from Butler and John Finn’s reply left the score at 1-4 to 0-2 at the break.

Browne’s third free opened the second half before a spell of Milford dominance was rewarded by Tony Connolly’s free and Finn. But they failed to come closer as final passes were dropped and were hit by Browne and Jim Franklin on the break. Cathal Geraghty pulled one back but an increasingly confident Knockane entered the comfort zone through points from Ryan and Franklin before PJ Byrne’s reply ended the scoring.
