6th July 2006, City Junior Football Championship

Milford 3-10 Na Piarsigh 2-11

Milford GAA club continued to make historic strides forward this week, when fielding a team in the City Junior A Championship for the first time. Na Piarsaigh made the trip to Roselawn to provide the opposition. Having recently claimed the City Junior Football League title, the Caherdavin men entered the game as strong favourites.

Na Piarsaigh, backed by a strong breeze, had the better of the opening exchanges, scoring 1-1 in quick time. However, Milford gradually found their feet, and were boosted when Barry Ryan got on the end of a dropping ball to punch to the net. The sides then traded scores, before Na Piarsaigh edged three points clear by the end of the first quarter (1-2 to 1-5). With the Milford defence starting to gain the upper hand, the second quarter belonged to the home side. A second fisted goal, this time from John Collins, levelled the scores and Ger Collins put Milford ahead with a fine point (2-3 to 1-5). Although Na Piarsaigh managed to equalise, Milford struck for their third major just before half time, Liam O’Meara bundling home, after John Collins struck the post with a rasping shot. A Na Piarsaigh point rounded out the scoring for the half.

HT: Milford 3-3 Na Piarsaigh 1-7

The second half started with Milford totally on top. Within 5 minutes, points from Darren Hyland (2) and Darragh Murphy had stretched their lead to five. Na Piarsaigh replied with a point of their own but that was quickly answered by a Liam O’Meara score. The Caherdavin men then pounced for a goal and the gap was just two (3-7 to 2-8). Crucially though, Milford were able to respond immediately with a pointed free from John Collins, awarded after a goalbound Ger Collins was dragged down on the 13m line. Na Piarsaigh attempted to reel in the deficit, but resolute Milford defending limited them to three further points. In between, Milford broke away to add two points, from midfielder John Morrissey and an inspirational score from Darren Hyland. A tense final 5 minutes ensued, but the home side held out to claim a fully-merited two point win.
