Milford 2-11 Monaleen 1-6

Milford chalked up their third consecutive win in the City Junior A Championship when overcoming neighbours Monaleen by 2-11 to 1-6 at Roselawn last Thursday evening.

Playing against a slight breeze, the home side started the stronger and quickly moved ahead with points by Shane Galvin and Ger Collins. Monaleen were contesting strongly at midfield but brilliant defensive play by Milford limited the visitors to mostly half chances. The hosts moved further clear with scores from half forward Collins, his namesake John (free) and Darren Hyland. Monaleen opened their account with a fine goal, and when they added a point soon afterwards, the margin was down to just one with under 10 minutes to the break (0-5 to 1-1). Milford responded with another fine point from Ger Collins, before a cross-shot from Darren Hyland was fumbled by the goalkeeper, John Collins pouncing to raise a green flag from close range. Monaleen converted a free with the last kick of the half to leave four points between the sides at half time.

HT: Milford 1-6 Monaleen 1-2

The away side were sharply out of the blocks in the second half, halving the deficit with two points in as many minutes. Milford rallied with two points of their own, through Ger Collins and Darren Hyland, but Monaleen replied with one to remain in touch (1-8 to 1-5). A key factor in this very even period of the game was the fanastic pressure applied by the Milford backs to any Monaleen player in possession and within striking distance of the posts - the visitors were to miss a handful of attempts on goal due to this close attention and were never again able to close the gap to less than three points. Instead, Milford moved clear, with Ger Collins (his fifth), substitute Cathal Geraghty and John Collins (free) clipping over points (with a solitary Monaleen score in reply) to extend the lead further (1-11 to 1-6). In the final minute, Geraghty completed the scoring when he outjumped the Monaleen defence to fist a Barry Ryan '45' to the net.
