Milford 2-9 Monaleen 1-8

Colman O’Flaherty’s goal ten minutes from time proved to be decisive as Milford, Limerick’s youngest GAA club, scored an upset victory over neighbours and reigning champions Monaleen in last night’s City junior B football semi-final in Rathbane. Although the winners hit the front with an early goal and held the advantage up to the break, Monaleen took over with a blistering restart and looked to be heading towards a successful defence of their title as Trevor Lovelle and Anthony O’Dwyer began to make a serious impact up front.

Milford, however, kept their heads, whittled back the deficit, recovered the lead before O’Flaherty found the net and, in an action-packed end to a very entertaining hour’s football, kept their heads to advance to their first ever final in adult competition.

After Ollie McGarr opened the scoring within a minute, Brian Begley replied with a free for Monaleen before Milford got the break when Leonard Dolan stole in behind the defence to take the pass and find the net. PJ Byrne added a point almost immediately but, as Monaleen began to neutralise the early dominance of Barry Ryan and Fabian Healy in midfield, they hit back through Lovelle and Dave Brosnan and, after McGarr broke the sequence, shaved off another pair through Lovelle and Begley’s free. However Dolan gave Milford an extra inch of comfort with the last score of a half that ended at 1-4 to 0-5.

Cathal Geraghty widened the margin on the restart but strong Monaleen pressure told when Lovelle hit two in a row and their tails were up when O’Dwyer broke through the defence to shoot past Kevin Keenan. An immediate point in reply from Byrne steadied Milford, Tony Connolly’s free had them level and, following an excellent Keenan save off Lovelle, they were back ahead when Healy soloed in from the corner to score from a narrow angle.

Straight from the kickout, Dolan set up O’Flaherty for his goal and, although O’Dwyer pointed for Monaleen, Healy’s final score provided Milford’s insurance.
