Mungret 1-12 Milford 1-3

Holders Mungret began their defence of the City junior B football championship on a winning note by getting the better of group 2 opponents Milford in Roselawn last evening. And while they had nine points to spare at the end of a very competitive hour played in a downpour, it was only in the closing quarter that they finally put some daylight between themselves and a tenacious opposition. Eugene McNamara’s converted penalty, coming right after Leonard Dolan had blasted inches wide of the posts at the other end, proved to be the turning point of the game as the winners saw a possible deficit of two points transform into a lead of five with the space of a minute.

Dolan began the scoring, converting a free after he himself been fouled in his side’s first attack. However, with Colm Moriarty dominating the air, Mungret enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession but were repeatedly foiled by solid defending until Dave Creed broke the ice.

One point from play and two from frees from former county under-21 representative Owe Rice looked to have put them in control but they were brought back to square one when Cathal Geraghty’s 20 yard bullet gave Tom Dee no chance after Dolan’s run had split the defence. Mungret, however, regained the lead through Brendan Ryan and Creed’s point left them with a 0-6 to 1-1 advantage at the break.

Although Moriarty had the first score on the restart, Milford, inspired by Dolan’s running from midfield, dominated the third quarter and PJ Byrne and Colman O’Flaherty’s massive free brought the gap back to the minimum. But it all went wrong for them as, following Dolan’s miss, Geraghty hobbled off injured, Morarity scored directly after fielding the kickout and, in the next action, Rice was pulled down for McNamara’s penalty.

Now with a comfortable lead, Mungret were able to extend with points from Rice, McNamara, Shay Whiston and Rice’s free in the closing minutes.
