City Junior B hurling championship, 4/7/04

Patrickswell 6-13 Milford 0-1

After their spirited performance in their first ever hurling fixture last weekend, Milford were brought back to earth when overwhelmed by Patrickswell in Sunday morning’s second round of the City junior B championship at the latter’s ground. A phenomenal opening spell which netted them 6-4 in the first thirteen minutes had the game over before it had hardly begun and the hosts could afford the loss of two players and still coast effortlessly home.

Although Alan Purcell picked off two points, the opening exchanges were even enough until Purcell pounced on a defensive error for the first goal. With that, the shape of the Milford defence collapsed as Pat Purcell, John O’Donnell of an upright rebound, Alan Purcell of a crossbar rebound, Seán Enright and O’Donnell again, after Kieran Kennedy’s point, all whipped to the net.

Following Peter Harty’s point, Milford finally got a chance to settle and, after a few wides, Colin Fitzpatrick converted a free. Enright’s reply was the only score during a spell in which defences held sway and which ended with an incident that saw O’Donnell and Alan Purcell red-carded for dissent. Brian Mulqueen’s long-range strike left his side leading 6-6 to 0-1 at the break.

Harty pointed from his own half right after the restart before Milford used their numerical advantage to take the game to their opponents. But a lack of penetration up front gave them no reward and, as the Well picked it up in the closing minutes, Pat Purcell, Kennedy, Harty, Purcell again and two more from Harty ended the scoring.
